The Worcestershire village of Ombersley lies in the Wychavon district of the county and was the home of Lord Sandy and his descendants. It was also part of the Royal Forest right up until 1229 and hosted Royal hunting parties. This seems highly appropriate given that over 6 centuries later the village held its own race meeting on Wednesday 31st March 1847. The meeting took place on a tract of land called ‘the Oldfields’ owned by Mr Wood of Hays. The course was 1 ¾ miles in length and contained 10 hedge leaps and 3 hurdles. The main Sweepstakes of the day was won by Miss Midas owned by Mr J Wood. After racing a grand dinner was served at the Crown and Sandy’s Arms. Although there is no further evidence of a horse race meeting taking place in the village, it was the scene of coursing events on Lord Sandy’s estate, and in the last years of the 19th century pony races were staged.
